Globally recognised as pioneers of insulation and building technologies with energy conservation at their core, Kingspan operate in over 70 countries across the world. The Sherburn UK site specialises in insulated panels and structural steel solutions, and currently has around 350 employees at this facility alone.
Following an increase in demand for insulated panels, Kingspan needed a deeper and quicker board cutting solution. Already owners of one Elcon vertical panel saw, they knew the capabilities of the machinery and went on to investigate the advanced cutting solutions of the Elcon Titan.
“Our existing saw only cut up to 80mm. We needed to upgrade in order to cut 150mm boards, it was a case of finding a saw on the market which could cut up to that thickness”, explained Adam Coles, Operations Director. Following discussions with exclusive UK distributor Daltons Wadkin, Adam quickly realised the Elcon Titan would be perfect for the job.
The Elcon Titan was specifically developed to meet the growing demand for offsite construction, offering increased cutting depth for structurally insulated panels. Depending on the material being cut, the Titan is available as a 155 frame with a cutting capacity of 3300 x 1550mm, and the 215 frame with 4300 x 2150mm cutting capacity. For non-standard material sizes the Titan can be extended vertically and/or horizontally to provide increased cutting capacity if required.
Adam Coles told us that for Kingspan safety, accuracy and durability are key. At busy times the Titan operates on a double shift, 16 hours a day, five days a week. A machine of this ability can imply difficulty in operator training and extensive understanding of the technology, however Adam Coles tells us that operating the Elcon Titan was a “pretty straight forward, simple process”, and that the operators had gained their confidence running it.
Effective dust extraction is vital for operator health, especially when cutting cementitious board. The patented and award winning LIMPIO dust system has been designed to mitigate operator exposure by capturing dust both in front and behind the panel throughout the cutting process. An impressed Adam Coles told us, “The LIMPIO dust extraction is working really well. We have regular air monitoring tests which are done while the machine are in operation and there’s never any issue with contamination”.
The Titan has currently been installed for just over 10 weeks. Daltons Wadkin provide ongoing comprehensive after sales support. Adam Coles summarised, “It has been ideal for what we need to produce, and if we needed a machine of that specification and capability again, we would not hesitate to come back to Daltons Wadkin”.
